I have never sailed on the ocean but on lakes where I live and a drunk jet ski hit my Cap Dory 19 ft and holed it and it sank fast. The idiot was a rich mans son and they were making runs at me and hit me. I got sued for the lose of there jet ski. I had a pump on board but the hole was big. I have read several articles of sailboat hitting containers that have fell of ships. That is scares me.

All these comments and nobody noticed that the pud whacker filming this debacle missed catching the moment of the boat going under because he was too busy filming grandma with no panties on. Idiotic, shame on you for missing that important footage.

Clearly the problem was that there was water inside the boat. They should have removed the water to restore buoyancy.

Very sad thing. Im sorry for them. I have two fears, hitting submerged objects and pirates. But for the objects like containers that fell off container ships, isnt there any defense like sonar?

I saw the video and I agree that it is sad to see a boat sinking. My condolences to the owners, and thank god sailors still are the kind of people that are always eager to help.
My really strong complain to the builders that are now making boats that have such a stupid lousy rudder construction. I saw many of them, and I think there should be some regulations about it. All of us that sail long distance know, that this kind of rudder is not safe. Dry lock hoses and block reinforced around the shaft rudder, are neither substantially more expensive to build nor add a weight big enough to be considered. I would never recommend a boat like this for cruising boats. In this case there were no life losses and that is the only important thing in my opinion. Probably next boat this people will own will be stronger in many ways. god bless you all and good luck. -

Awww Jesus, watching this hurts so bad. Very unfortunate. Hope insurance covers it and the owners managed to salvage their belongings from it.

Srecko and Olga Pust were taking part in the rally and sailing their Sweden Yachts 45 Ciao two-handed and were nearing the end of a long passage from Indonesia to the remote Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The were only 40 miles from landfall. The rudder was all but knocked off in an impact with the submerged object (possibly a whale?). The first sign of the problem was that the boat was difficult to steer. When Srecko Pust investigated below he saw that the boat had been holed at the rudder stock. He put out a Mayday on the boat's long range SSB radio and then the two did everything they could to save their yacht, leaving only as the boat sank beneath them. They broadcast a Mayday. The only crew to hear this immediately was another a World ARC yacht nearby, J'Sea, a Jeanneau 52.2 owned by a highly experienced Canadian cruiser, John Cuzner. He alerted others. J'Sea and two other rally yachts, Royal Leopard and Spirit of Alcides, diverted and reached Ciao's position within hours. The video linked below was taken from on board Spirit of Alcides, a Challenger 39 owned by Australians Gus and Linda Pallot.
