Crews are evacuated prior ships destruction, apart from few captains who choose to go down with their ship. Rather depressing actually. Also Germany during the war got very negative rep due to unrestricted submarine warfare, though you can google that for more details. Have a nice weekend, don't drown yourselves in booze :)
