The War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1715) was a major European conflict of the early 18th century over who should be the next Spanish King. It started over whether a Bourbon or a Habsburg would take control of Spain's very extensive possessions, with a coalition of the Habsburg Monarchy, the Dutch Republic, England, Scotland, and Prussia supporting the Habsburg candidate opposed by France and Bavaria supporting the Bourbon candidate. After some early allied successes, the war produced a long military stalemate and ended with the Treaty of Utrecht, which was based on a balance of power in Europe.

From '90 to 02' I worked up in Dutch Harbor Alaska. Many don't know that there was a military base there back in WWII and it was the only other US soil that was attacked besides Pearl Harbor. There was a ship docked there that was serving as housing for workers. It was launched in 1889 and originally named the Oriziba but renamed the Northwestern in 1906. It was hit by a bomb from a Japanese aircraft and was badly damaged. It was eventually moved to the head of Captains Bay where it still remains; about 50 feet of her hull is visible. I got to take a skiff out to it a couple times and believe me, it's very creepy...
