What I think are best missile/gun boats currently in service or about to enter service with world's navies. A gun/missile boat is a small warship (smallest surface combatant) equipped with basic surface to air and surface to surface capability. However as technology evolved ever more sophisticated and complex systems can be placed on ever decreasing size of ship's hull. Normally between 30 and 70m in length gun./missile boat has a crew of 20-40 with assortment short range sensors and weapon fit. Usual fitting of a standard gun boat consist of up to 8 surface to surface or anti ship missiles SSMs, one or two small caliber 20-30mm AA guns, one larger 57-76mm caliber naval gun and two 12.7mm HMGs normally for self protection. Some gunboats carry additional short range surface to air missiles and anti submarine torpedoes or mines, making them ideal choice for anti submarine platforms for they're small, agile and hard to target by an submarine due to their hull construction being often made of composite materials. Price of gunboats is dependent of sub systems installed on each unit, but can very from around $80 million for a basic unit armed with one medium AA gun and anti ship missiles such as Houbei class, to $300 million for Hamina or Ambassador III Class. But there are few exceptions to the rule, example Croatian Kralj (King) class although extreemly well armed with CIWS, up to 8 SSMs and 57mm naval gun, lacks few essential bits that would make this warship stand out, missing active and passive/soft kill jamers/decoys, a sonar and has relatively basic sensors. Houbei on the other hand has stealth characteristic and relatively modern combat management system, but still relatively basic sensors/radar, therefore not as capable as Kralj Class, IF Kralj Class received all the latest upgrades including the missing sub systems, the ranking on my list would be way higher. Some ships on my list are classed as small corvettes by their respective home navies, Swedish and Norwegian warships on my list, but for all tense and purposes these aren't corvettes for they lack essential capabilities that would made these ships classed as such. Corvettes are smallest of the capitol ships with bare minimum length of 70m and displacement of 700 tons, although this standard has now moved somewhat in recent years where a standard modern corvette is around 85-110m in length and displacing 1250-2500GRT.
