Call me lazy, I was thinking of buying a boat....but after watching this video...I'll think hard about it.

how to you circulate antifreeze through pwcs

So glad I live in Southern California....

I've simply drained the engine block on my boat for the last thirty years and have never had a problem. What little water remains in the block has plenty of room to expand as ice and doesn't do any damage what-so-ever.

I didn't hit the part today where they said get it to operating temperature so the thermostat can open then pump the antifreze. I just drained the block and truned the motor back on to suck all of the antifreeze in when the engine wasn't at operating temperature. Still the antifreeze started going out of the exhaust either way. so i think i'm good. Plus the boat is stored indoors with a cover on it. So i doubt the temperatures will go that extreme. Still i think the block is full of pink antifreeze.

before re-installing vent plugs, inspect and change the washer if needed.

we hit minus 55C this year where i am. LOL.

Why change the oil so new oil sits all winter?
-
Its best to drain the exhaust manifold and engine block, then run antifreeze through the cooling system. There will be less water mixing, increasing the antifreeze's concentration through the block and cooling passage ways ensuring any residual water will not freeze and crack the block. Wait to replace the impeller in the beginning of the next season. It will operate more effeciently since the impeller hasn't spent the entire off season cold, compressed and bent in place, losing its strength.

This is nothing but one big commercial for west marine products.. they could tell you all this in 4 minutes instead of ten..! Like get to the point..!
-
Remember to change your impeller too, if running a Mercruiser Bravo or Volvo setup.

Filling your tank is old news and very bad. Even with stabilizer, the fuel still can get a little gelly and it will go down in octane quite a bit. Leave your tank as empty as possible with stabilizer in it, so you can fill it with fresh fuel in the spring. One can easily damage an engine and have to run en entire tank of stale fuel is just asking for it. Fuel does not have the quality it did many years og. Also the Ethanol in todays fuel is hydrophile. Get it out and fill up in the spring.
-
While I think it would be best to drain, then refill, the vast majority of users will simply pump the antifreeze through the cooling system and "push" the water out the exhaust. That's one of the reasons to use a lower temp antifreeze: it allows you a little wiggle room if there is some residual water in the block and cooling passages. Running the engine a little longer will allow a higher concentration of the antifreeze.
-
Do you need to drain the block before you pump the antifreeze in or will all the water come out when you pump the antifreeze in?
-
thanks for all the info. but i how do i winterize the carbs on my 1999 johnson 70hp 2 stroke 3 cylinders?
-
Thanks for this video.. I'm about to winterize my inboard and this helped me to solidify the process (drain vs antifreeze). While some think this is too complicated, there are even more steps that can be taken to insure proper functioning in the spring. There is cable maintenance and lube as well as oiling down the engine to minimize rust. And one does not have to do this himself, a shop will gladly do it for $400-$600 depending on the amount of work you want done. I love having a boat!
