In fact the reason that no water leaks out is because the top was completely covered and creating a partial vacuum and preventing the water from escaping. yeah yeah , I know, I'm a smart ass :)None the less that was a nice cut and a good method :)

In the 70s you could buy a kit made for kids that cut bottles and it used a candle to het the cut I don't see the big deal.about cutting a bottle

how about a Nicrome wire with X amount of electrical current heating the wire and used to melt through the glass. The melted edge should be smooth as well. If the heat doesn't cause the glass to crack. Bottle glass is formulated to mold quickly and have strength.

i don't have the tools, but was wondering if you knew or could investigate something for me. what if you fill the bottle with water up to the line and then use the blow torch? would the water dissipate the heat of the bottom enough so that when you chill the top area of the bottle, only the top cracks along the water line, this is assuming you don't care about the top and simply want to make a cup.
Is it possible to cut the bottom out of a champagne bottle without taking any of the side with it? I have some champagne bottles with a pewter rim around the bottom and would like to be able to make it into a light. To do that would require a large hole in the bottom without destroying the bottom edge. Look at Segura Viudas Reserva Heredad and you will see the bottle i am talking about.
