You're looking for something a little less fast and furious, and a little more fast but still kind of sensible. Volkswagen's got just the answer. Meet the Passat 206TSI R-Line, and under all that elegant, mature metal lives a version of the beating heart of the mentalist Golf R. And that means this is going to be fun. The newly arrived 206 TSI R-Line sits atop the Passat tree in Australia, and is touted as the spiritual successor to the R36, even if it offers slightly less power and less sporty exterior than that model. What if does offer, however, is the turbocharged 2.0-litre from the Golf R, which will fire 206kW and 350Nm to all four wheels via the six-speed DSG transmission. That means you’ll be clipping 100km/h in 5.5secs, with selectable driving modes and an adaptive chassis coming along for the ride. But all that go fast stuff is only part of the story, with the Passat 206 more than capable of acting like a sedate and luxurious cruiser when you want it to. At $56,990 it might not be particularly cheap, but it's fabulously well equipped. In fact, only metallic paint and a sunroof make an appearance on the option list. Outside, you get the 19-inch alloys and sportier front end of the R-Line pack, while inside you get Leather R-Line sports seats, alloy pedals and paddles, the same flat-bottom leather wheel as the Golf R. You can also expect three-zone climate control, proximity unlocking and push-button start. But the headline act in the interior is the new Active Info Display dash, with the Passat 206 the first VW to get the 12.3-inch TFT screen that replaces the the traditional gauges in the drivers binnacle, and makes using the navigation function and absolute breeze. Passat 206TSI R-Line is comprehensively equipped with safety kit, too, with nine airbags, parking sensors and a reversing camera all arriving as standard kit. But you’ll also get city-speed AEB, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and a self-parking system. Life in the backseat is plenty spacious, thanks too BLAH BLAH. While that shapely boot opens to reveal 586l of luggage space in a long and deep opening, and the 60:40 rear seats drop at the push of a button to make life even easier. 1152l The Golf R is one of our favourite go-fast hatchbacks, and transferring the critical bits to the Passsat has don't nothing to dampen our enthusiasm. In fact, we might even like the Passat more. And that's because it works so much better in this car. It never feels tightly wound, and is happy to chug along comfortably as you like in the city. But engage sport and plant your foot and this thing fires like it's been shot out of a cannon. A near-perfect blend of potent performance and tech-laden luxury, the Passat 206TSI R-Line is a whole lot of fun hidden behind an elegant an understated design. CarsGuide - Buy cars. Sell cars.
