well this answers my question on the last video I watched lol I'll try it on my Ranger. I'm striping everything off of it anyways this summer.
-
wet spray tire shine works, lasts about 5 days too!
-
I tried this and it was a mess. I ended up just replacing the headlights. I wish I had seen this earlier.
-
Once the deet did it's thing, what if you just cleaned it off???
-
I'm so glad I researched and found this video before I tried this on my truck!!!!!!!!! thank you!
-
My wifes friend did this and RUINED my headlights. Thanks, dont use bugspray. Pony up some dough for new headlights. Not that expensive.
-
could i use bugspay, wash off the deet then clearcoat it?
-
thanx for sharing. I've used so many store products and nothing worked. gotta fork over for some new ones i guess:(
-
ChrisFx can't I use WD-40 ?
-
hey chris what if you were to use bus spray then your clear coat spray method right after ?
-
What if you used the deet to clear the lens, then clean the deet off, then use a UV sealant? This would eliminate the need to sand?
-
I accidentally dripped some brake fluid on a hazy headlight one time, and watched it clear up the haze instantly. Of course, after wiping the entire headlight to clean all the haze, I cleaned it off with glass cleaner to remove any trace of the brake fluid. That basically did the same thing as DEET, and lasted dang near a year, slowly getting hazy again (10+ year old truck).

my nice knife got destroyed because the handle was plastic!:(
-
I have tried it but only lasted 3-4 days. It did messed up my bumpers but it was only my winter beater so I didn't care. I used the toothpaste method and it workz!
-
What would happen if you use the bug spray, clean it off, and then use the UV clear coat spray paint?
-
Why do people put solvents and acids on their cars? There is an entire industry dedicated to polishing plastic. They have tested and reinvented their products hundreds of times. Novus plastic polish #2 on the worst headlights ($8) and that bottle would clean 50 headlights. The industry uses small Alumina polish particulate down to micron size that buffs the high spots off, and a finish with light pressure polishes the plastic like a jeweler polishes gold.
Maybe you would like to continue to get the bugs off your windshield with sandpaper, or the tree sap off your paint with brake fluid. Wake up people, a can of light melting Deet is $8, or and industry devoted to R&D for this very purpose, sells a 50 application product that works perfect and harms nothing else for $8.
This "life hack" crap is way out of hand........ -
DEET was developed/discovered as a solvent for plastic, and I recall melting and sticking the knob of fishing reels etc. as a kid. You just destroyed your headlight, and the damage will go far deeper than the surface oxidation which you could have easily buffed off using PlastX without ever resorting to sandpaper, etc. I still think minimal removal of material, followed by frequent use of good modern polymer car 'wax' will keep the lights newer longer than the drastic sand-and-spraycoat that commits you permanently to major effort and loss of plastic material. No spray coat is as tough as the OEM polycarbonate lens material.

After reading I propose a Chris Quick Fix solution. Use bug spray. Wash thoroughly. Apply 2 coates of wax. Apply clear coat. Wouldn't the wax layers act as a buffer so the clear coal doesn't bubble? This method would be a better solution for very oxidized headlights, and a quicker solution as well.
Bug spray headlight restoration. This is a video to show you how bug spray with DEET, can clean and restore headlights by removing oxidation, haze, and yellowing plastic. Hopefully this clears things up and shows you the truth behind using bug spray to restore headlights! The problem with the bug spray is that it doesnt last and it will damage your headlights and can damage your paint and trim. I go into why the OFF Deep Woods bug spray works, how it can damage your paint, and if you do want to try it, how to apply it to reduce the chances of any damage. I do not recommend using this method to clear up your headlights, instead I recommend using toothpaste which will not damage your headlights or the surrounding trim/paint.
