Elytras are the part of a bug that protects the delicate wings. They do not actually give lift, but rather cover the wings when the bug is not flying.

Probably everybody and their dog has told you by now that elytra = the 'shell' on a beetle's* back, formed from a modified pair of wings. What they may /not/ have mentioned is that beetles may owe their success (their order contains more species than any other, 40% of all known insect species are beetles and 25% of ALL KNOWN SPECIES are beetles) to the elytra and its ability to serve as armor /and/ as a kind of environment-suit, retaining moisture in deserts and oxygen underwater.
*it was amusing how many times I kept typing "beatle", thus implying that John, Paul, George, and Ringo all had armored shells on their backs made from modified wings -
