I am old. Once I had a member of the merchant fleet working with me in a factory. His ship was sunk in 43, and the German sub actually came to the liferaft and gave them water, and told them the direction to sail in to get aid. They said to him:"You are going home, but look at us. We will never go home. We are DEAD ALREADY".

What was not mentioned in this episode was the contribution of the US Naval blimp service which made an excellent ASW platform that could remain aloft for days without refueling, and plod along with the convoys at their speed, constantly keeping an eye out for submarines.

I love this series because we get to hear from people like Karl Doenitz himself. My Generation grew up hearing the stories of the soldiers and sailors of the 2nd world war because they where very young at the time of the war, but most of the Generals and Admirals had already passed on. With this series we get to actually hear their words.

This remains a magnificent series - this episode demonstrates the bravery of the merchant marine, who never received the accolades they deserved.
