What is wrong with these people who defend this practice? Can't they see how incredibly destructive and wasteful it is? Something needs to give here, this blatant disregard for the environment and the other living creatures in it can't continue the way it is. I'm really scared that people will not stop until the devastation is irreversible.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

you right

bloody greenies, if you had your way you'd do everyone out of a job. go live in a tree and stop flicking the switch to turn on the power to post bullshit videos like this.

You got it in one mate!! lmao

in Taiwan, the real catch of market value is only around 20% of what they have in the net. Then they just pile up the non-market bit and the whole lot goes into a grinding machine to make animal feed. Professors from Hong Kong and Singapore like to visit those piles before grinding, to see if they can find any new species there. So I think the safest way is probably to protect some selected areas. As for near bottom--does it require more energy for the ship, or the other way round?
-
I see, so the modern day technology can make trawling so much more sensible. Around how many countries have these equipment? Because in Taiwan, they still drag everything and don't quite use their brains. So in reality, countries only need to ban trawlers from entering certain areas. (actually, no matter what equipment the ship has, countries should have zones that don't allow ships in, even recreational yachts need to slow down)
-
also i think i miss a little bit your question and sorry for that but about fishing zones, as i told you , fishermen use radar, echosounds, sonars and stuff like that firtly for making an evaluation, the different species has a specificall "pattern" in the sonar so that way they know wheres a school and of course they know what kind of floor are they trawling, im not deffending irresponsable people but i like to inform people about this cause its really relavant, i hope your answer is solved :)
-
they are bassed on historical records, oftenly plain bottom at least this is in my country, also bigger ships use radars to detect schools of certain species and of course the art of fishing is bassed on the study of the behavior of the objetive, thats why you cant use longlines for herrings or traps for tunas, the behavior of these determines the gear you need to use, in the case of shrimps where the trouble of bycatch is huge...you can use certains mods that makes your gear more selective :)

I suppose with every occupation, idiots can ruin the overall reputation. Surely bottom trawling across a reef is entirely silly for the fishermen in terms of efficiency, because you have so much cleaning to do. But from an ocean defender's point of view, it's the destruction towards biodiversity that matters. They see these people trawling across a reef--be it by mistake or what. Anyway, how do fisheries nowadays select location and prevent mistakes?
-
ooops, I think you were just too angry when you first saw this video.
-
Lol, wow did i really make that comment, I am so fuckin ashamed.
-
i hope you die first
-
easy solution, no more trawls
-
im a fishing engineer and bycatch is a serious problem "dirty catch", you have to waste time cleaning your catch, its really easy to talk shit about trawling and talk shit about fishermen, its even easier to be greenie specially when your life dont deppend on fisheries...you wanna blame anyone?blame the politics cause they are the owners of most important fisheries, they are rich! wanna say something? yeah GREENPEACE if you wanna help try helping us making fisheries better and sustainable PEACE!
-
at least 60% of the peoplo who says" fuck trawls" doesnt know anything about it, the more the trawl hits the bottom, the less eficience you will get!, fishermen cant afford to lose an entire trawl because of the cost of the gear and fuel of course, passing the trawl in a reef only means "losing your gear", also theres a lot of selectivity improvements, also the semi-pelagic trawl wich is near bottom but not on it,theres always irrisponsible people but thats happens everywhere unfortunely
-
@Mattmcbr Yea we can get our fish, but we don't have to go and kill other animals we don't even eat through trawling. There are animals that live on the sea floor ya know, and trawling can ruin habitats of fish and such.
-
@Mattmcbr Did I say we need to stop fishing? No. Its called fishing and not trawling up the bottom of the sea floor.
-
Oh jesus, i hope there comes a virus that kills all humans... so all other creatures can live in peace. And give the earth a chance to get back it's natural resources, Because IT ALL GONE DRIED UP, fuck america, fuck china, fuck japan.

Bottom trawls drag huge, heavy nets along the sea floor, crushing nearly everything in their path. See the destruction first hand by watching our bottom trawling video.
