What if I lived on the Water on 40' Cat. No Marinas / Just to get food repairs/ Monthly Cost and Yearly
-
So if my retirement pays me $4200 a month I still could not afford a $150,000 boat if I financed the boat? Based on the bottom line costs.

Thanks Mark, great videos

Well i can say this this person has no idea what it really cost first off if he did the same run down on living in an RV i know he would be so far off why he is only part of the gov crap trying to stop so many from living a cheaper way of life. I say this due to well yrs ago when we my wife and son looked into living in an RV everyone tried these same lies on us saying oh it will cost so much and all there lies. In the end living in an RV we save so much money its not even funny. In the last few months been doing the numbers on living full time on a sail boat and by all my numbers we could be saving even more then living in an RV. He way over killed so many things and never takes into account what a real person would really do first off there are lots of free places to dock at and get free water and even ways to dump waste. Also where they really fell off is when saying to have other land stuff well thats not really how most who live do it. Why waste the money. Just work yr stuff down to only what you need and the few things you really want. Also anyone these days who live on boats full time not tied up to dock. They have wind power solar and even some have hydrogenerators setup why to make all there power needs. I personaly know now after looking into it several full time livers on boats and they work seasonal jobs and live like kings on $10K plus a yr and have been doing it for a few of them now many yrs others just the last few. Any one who takes these BS charts he shows as how it is well yr a fool why just go to a few areas where its warmer and hit up a few free spots to tie up to and talk to a few that do live very cheap on a boat and you will find out just how full of it this part is on the cost.

what is cheaper living in a house with a mortgage + repairs + property tax + utilities + lawn care + storage if your stuff does not fit inside your home. or living on a boat with a boat payment + slip + repairs + utilities I am looking at living on a Hunter 45 cc but I don't know if living in a house or a boat is cheaper way to go. I love the idea of living on a boat because if I want to go some place I don't need a lot of money to take a trip

Great post. Thanks.

my point was not to try to find the incremental difference in expenses - but rather to address the myth that living aboard is really just a boat payment. many of the expenses here are things that many new buyers just don't consider - so i was attempting to craft an actual living budget. i'll leave it to the potential liveaboard to figure out whether this would be more or less expensive. hope it helps.

btw i don't mean to sound rude still nice work and useful video:-)

what your calcullating here is not living on a boat but rather a sample budged for living on a boat but its partial and incompleate in that sens but if you want to calculate the real deal ie expenses of living on a boat then you either need to add all expenses or add no expenses you would have in a regular home anyway meaning transport, telephone , internet etc . you you do add them it is wise to mention that these expenses would already be there in home but may be different ( ie cheaper or not)

Thanks for posting this video, and for all the work which went into it. This is very helpful. Please do not waste precious time, though, responding to obviously silly, stupid or ignorant rants or comments. Youtube is so open that people troll around, looking for places to post ludicrous and unworthy comments. Responding only encourages them. They go away.

look for free anchorage many charts will show you where they are.
-
Thanks for the response. My wife and I just started looking into this lifestyle so please bear with me. Can you just pull up to an island, drop anchor and wait to see if someone comes around to charge/site you? Is this practice frowned upon or are there some common guidelines to follow?
-
Hi, just went through your 5 part video series. Very informative with lots to think of. One thing that I have always wondered about. What if you pull into an area and not dock at a marina but just drop anchor in some open area close by? Does someone come around where you have to register, is there a fee for this? How does that work?
-
Costs differ from one area to another . Some areas are high to dock a boat and live while others are much cheaper. It all depends on the person and the way they wish to live month to month. I know people that do it on as little as $400 per month and others that spend as much as two grand per month.

I’ve been onboard for 10 years on a converted 30 foot by eight-foot pontoon boat. It has hot shower, head, solar power, and refrigerator, all off grid. Because it is has three aluminum pontoons it has minimal draft. I have avoided most of the issues these guys mention because in ten years. NO MAINTANTAINANCE.
-
This is BS. My family has been in yachts for decades and we lived aboard a 45 foot sailboat in Dinner Key Marina in Miami and it did noit cost even close to this chart.
-
@bluesman64 Yeah, I understand that. It was just shocking to see an estimate that high. I was thinking of taking sailing lessons until I were trained enough to be able to do Tranpac trips, and also sail the Caribbean. I planned to live on the boat, but not sit still in a slip very often. I have my eye on a Pearson 422 42' motor sailor. I just had no idea the costs would be anywhere near what your list showed. I expected cost, but was paying cash for the boat. I was expecting 1k a month tops.
