Deserves mentioning that the brave oarsman in the Oxford boat kept rowing as hard as the rest, to keep the boat balanced, even 'though his oar was broken. Great sportsmanship, great character. He deserves a special recognition, despite the bad taste this race may have left in some people's mouths.

I love how you said, it doesn't apply to "this" race, although that implies it applies to all other races? Wow, you're a nitwit that doesn't understand this sport or its rules and regulations. Quit spitting your ludicrous folly and think before you type, fool. The 100 m rule applies to all races, as it says in any Rowing rule book, look up both collegiate and professional handbooks, this isn't an oddity. The official messed up here, and he's too ashamed by the end to admit his failure.

I think the history of this race will be that Cambridge just got lucky, so bad for Oxford :(

I'm willing to bet you're single, mate.

Certainly the conditions in this situation did not affect the ability to steer into or away from the clash, I'm afraid.

After the restart, the umpire warned Oxford twice at 12', then again at 23', then repeatedly from 36' until the clash at 46'. 10 seconds, which is 5 or 6 strokes, should be enough for a cox to stir away, if he's willing to do so. In the Boat Race, 45' of race is more or less 300 m, so well over the first 100m after the restart. For me, the umpire took the good decision.
