I've been going on the U-505 ever since I was a little kid, I love going to the museum of science and industry and the U-505 is always the one thing I must do every time I go there, no exception. However as I've been watching many videos on it I realize many Germans are saying it doesn't belong there, while I can understand where you are coming from you should know that before it went on display on the 50's it was in terrible condition and the company that built it donated the parts to fix it, they said while they didn't believe it belonged in American hands they made the donation so it could be admired as the great piece of German engineering that it is. I must say I do very much admire it as that, if any of you have objections to it being where it is, I hope you get a chance to visit it someday, the facility it's it ensures it will always be safe and always be able to be admired as the great piece of German engineering it is

I've just read the diary of a u-boat commander (the actual diary) and from the looks of it a lot of Nazi submariners would often bum each other.

U 505 in Chicago at the Museum of Science and Industry is an amazing exhibit. I have been there dozens of times, each time you go you notice something different you didn't see before. The incredible thing is, you could actually drop this in the water today and use it. German engineering in these U boats is extraordinary.

jan hensel you are right. the one in laboe was commissioned in 1945, and sent to norway underthe commando of only a 2-striper. (oberleutnant). it never saw any fighting. nprwegian navy used it as a training vessel till it was decommissioned. admission to the boat now lying on land in laboe is about 5 euro, I think.

"Das Boot" was filmed at bavaria studios munich - wrong again, the U-boat in Laboe had nothing to do with it.
-
i thought the germans had more than just 230 u boats during the war... i thought it was like at least 4 times as much as that number
-
I found this video to be well made and very insightful.
-
I count 5 surviving u boats... 2 in Germany, one in England, one in Chicago, and one in Finland
