I cant speak for the coast guard but i know our unit stationed out of SUBASENLON routinely take up station on ferrys and other vessels in the CT river and long island sound as mock escort runs and usually run drills and what not much to the delight of the passengers lol. Allso serves the purpose of showing the flag an the presance.

It's Staten Island, not staton

July 8, 2006. Half way from Staton Island to New York City on the ferry, two Coast Gaurd gun boats raced out to meet us, taking up flanking positions on either side of the ship. They stayed with us for at least 10 minutes, pulling back only when we were fully docked in Manhattan. My Guess is they knew sombody important was on board and wanted to make sure they didn't jump ship before being grabed or trailed on the other side.
