And how about it, how many of you actually watched the whole show? Well the opening sketch with Justin Timberlake playing Elton John doing a musical tribute to the recently deceased leader of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, well it was perfect, particularly since everyt crazy thing he referenced in the song -- mars included -- was accurate and funny as hell -- but not as funny as what I consider to be one of the best opening monologues they've ever done, inducting Justin Timberlake into the five timer's club--- any of you out there know an opening which was better? --along with all the cameos by everyone from Steve Martin to Martin Short, Tom Hanks, Candice Bergen, Paul Simon, Dan Akroyd (and I loved the bottles of his Crystal Head Vodka placed behind him ) and Chevy Chase along with SNL writer Michael Patrick O'Brien (from the YouTube Seven Minutes in Heaven videos.) I loved every minutes of it, only to come crashing down to earth when they returned from their first break with a Game show sketch - which are usually a huge waste of time -- but not today as Andy Samberg popped up with Justin Timberlake as the Dick in a Box boys -- and then THEY were one upped by an appearance by Steven Martin and Day Akroyd playing the those wild and crazy guys from the show's first years. It was just amazing -- as was the return of Timberlake's singing and dancing sidewalk sign character-- this time as a block of tofu, going up against Bobby Moynihan shilling for a italian restaurant, which then lead into a parody commercial for a new birth control device called Nuvabling, which was funny because they ladies sold it so well, and which brought us to Weekend Update which was solid as usual, although it relied heavily on an appearance by Bill Hader as Stephan, and his ability to crack up both himself and Seth Myers repeatedly, bringing to an end the longest block of awesomeness I can remember the show delivering in a long, long time. One super solid hour of comedy and music -- which put on the breaks with The Tales of Sober Caligula which delivered an awesome settup but quickly drown in its own cheap urine and sex jokes -- which just weren't my cup of pee, but which I liked infinitely more than the return of Main Justice, once again wasting the talents of Jason Sudeikis on a bad southern accent. But all was not lost during the last half hour as Cecily Strong and Vanessa Bayer returned with those two hilarious former porn stars turned cable TV pitchwoman, this time selling Moet Champagne -- whose sales are about to go through the roof. But overall what a night, what a show -- we even got a duet be Timberlake and JZ -- and what a collection of talent all together at the end of an amazing night. Well, the cast gets three well deserved weeks off and will be back on April 3rd with a future member of the 5 timers's club, Melissa McCarthey hosting, but what a tough act this is going to be to follow.
