That is one ugly Motor launch. Nice rescue though.

That is how they collect on the insurance on a old boat , then they buy a new one. The Florida way.

good man. laws or common decency aren't followed by many and this guy could have acted like he didn't hear the call. but he went out of his way to do the right thing. good job!

I am so shocked the American would go one mile out of their way to save a few lives, shocked! I thought they were all fuck you take care of yourselves! I bet one of them sue's the other.

Oh that poor boat!

Yeh...that's the story..."didn't have any formal training." That's just the problem...someone can buy a boat...a deadly weapon...put it in the water with no training at all and get hurt or hurt someone else. Then you throw in owner/operators with no common sense, alcohol, and plain old stupidity...and there you have a formula for disaster. What's wrong with that picture?

"We can go help these folks"... a excuse me but it's a law of the sea to render aid when able not your "option" buddy. glad you did the right thing but if you go out on the water this isn't optional... idiot...

what caused the sinking? forget to put the drain plug back in?
Likely the largest rescue on the water in the Bay Area this holiday weekend wasn't by law enforcement or the Coast Guard. A private sailboat helped to save a family of 10 from the sea and their sinking boat near Egmont Key. "I heard a mayday call," said David Hoch, an experienced sailor. Hoch was able to determine through coordinates, that his boat was close to the sinking 41-foot Carver yacht. Andreas Dettlaff says he had a sinking feeling when his wife told him the entire rear swim deck was underwater. Soon, water was starting to rush into the cabins. "It was taking on water quite quickly. I knew we were in trouble. There was no way out of this one," Dettlaff said. Detlaff had only purchased the boat about a month ago, but he has been boating since he was a kid. He had his family put on life jackets and they were gathered on the bow of the boat when Hoch's boat the "Abundance" floated up. "At that point the stress level went away quickly because I knew no matter what, it's just a quick jump in the water, a short little swim and we're all safe," Dettlaff said. Hoch had some of his crew jump in to help swim over some of the sinking family. Just minutes after everyone made it onboard the Abundance, the Carver sunk beneath the surface completely. "He really saved us in so many ways from the situation, even if the seas were nice and it was a beautiful day it could've gotten ugly," Dettlaff said. "If there's a chance to lend a hand, we do, and I know somebody would help me if I was in distress," Hoch said. Dettlaff said he isn't sure what went wrong to cause his boat to take on water, but it will be recovered on Tuesday.
