Hi Gary, Building IRENE seems to have been a very nice introduction to model sailboat building. Sailing her is just a joy, the dream of ten months (time of my construction) come true. I hope lots of people build and sail her! Being new to sailing, I have a question. The RC racing sailboats all seem to control the angle of the boom with a boom vang. It doesn't seem needed on IRENE. Instead I've noticed her booms held with a line from the top of the mast to the end of the boom. Why the difference from the racing sloops?Mucho gracias!

Absolutely beautiful! I am going to be building an RC sailboat and I am quite sure the 'IRENE' fits the bill. I admire Garys' calm demeanour and ingenuity to keep things simple without breaking the bank on expensive hardware!
I would like to put on a couple of topsails and wonder if it would be feasible to add a double chine to her without changing the general lines.
What with the low cost of hull supply, I would have no problem to attempt a double chine, but only if you think it would benefit the boat.
I wouldnt want to screw around with your wonderful design without your approval!
The 'IRENE' would be a wonderful vessel to dedicate to my late mother who's name was also Irene! -
I'd love to sail "Grace" there. Reminds me of Stuart Little.

It's much more satisfying when you build it yourself.

Random clips of 3 scratch built sailing models. The sloop is 39" (1M) long and displaces 13lbs (5.9kg). The schooners are 48" (1.22M) long and displace 25lbs (11.4kg). They are all made of wood and have no motors, relying on wind in the cotton sails for power. Plans for the Schooner "Irene" can be found at: http://www.bearospaceindustries.com/boats2.html These designs portray sailing boats from the (not too distant ) past, the type we might now call "classic" or "vintage".
