Aloha Brian, Capt Mike and Jenny here in Maui Hawaii, Just found your video on you tube, worst storm ever! Yahoo reminds me of the time I sailed through the eye of Hurricane kate in 76' but look much nicer. We sold Alona Blue and she was delivered to Thailand and running charters there. Looks like you guys are having a blast. If you ever get to Hawaii stop by for a hot shower. Fair winds, Cheer's Mate

Respect to the crew, there was no bravado in that gale. The sea after all can be scary as hell.
-
Hey guys, what is the name of the wind simulator chart that you were using at mark 7:20
-
amazing!
-
i miss Babs :) these crew by far is the best
-
02:10 is that a generator?
-
Been following since episode one. That boat has been beat to shit. When you're done put it on any Craigslist you choose. Neptune help the idiot that buys it.
-
50 knots with a genoa ? nope.
-
WOW this is the shit!!
-
Gutsy folks sailing right along at night in 40 knots. In my experience, everything seemed MUCH worse in the dark! So the fact that she can drive calmly and note that "its a bit scary" makes me admire her courage.
-
50 knots is definitely a storm (NOT A GALE)
-
With all the forecasts you have available to you, would it have been a better idea to avoid the 50mph winds?
-
Might have been a good night to heave to before it all set in?
-
yes the AMELs are built for just this, you don't have a storm jib for occasions over 45 Kts ?,saves stretching the furler sail & good for 60 after that lock up, go below and just hang on , the boat finds its best angle with the wheel lashed(bet you were glad you weren't in a Bavaria)great vid ,it only gets better.
-
Awesome! So good.

I came late to the party and loved your entire venture. I have to admit that I prefer the sailing to the scuba diving. Great job on the stormy passage to Madagascar. You stayed calm and in control. I was surprised though that no one was wearing life jackets especially those on deck. Keep going. Chris

guys i love that you are sailing.
but Please do not use a Genoa on a cruising boat in Hi winds ,
that why you have a storm sail.
if it unrolls it will blow out or turn you around and
before you have made that turn the boat will be hit and rolled.
trying to put a storm sail in 50 knot wind is to late
also all your gear on deck can turn in to missiles get it off the decks were you can.
wishing you well. R E -
Looks like you were pretty well in control but any thought of heaving to? Great adventure.
-
Great video! There is a description on Quora of Delos' first owner of riding out a 60 knot storm, shorthanded, for 24 hours, so it seems the boat can take a lot...
Do you guys have a strategy set up for when things would get worse, with big breaking waves, and even heaving to wouldn't be safe? And do you have something like a Jordan series drogue or Galerider on board? -
Fantastic episode guys! We watched it on our boat in the Bahamas, in a 30 knot blow, with a swell coming in the anchorage. Felt like we were immersed in your adventure. Thanks for all your hard work getting these video to us. Cheers from M/V C-Shel!
Sailing to Madagascar we get hit by the biggest gale we've ever seen. We're about 240 miles East of the northern cape of Madagascar when the GRIB files start to show a compressed pressure gradient and forecasts of 30-40 knots. We shorten sail and prepare for the rough weather. The forecast is way too low and we end up seeing 50 knots of wind and 7-10M (20-30 ft) waves during the worst part of it, which of course happens at night. The crew gets tossed around like crazy and everyone is forced to stay in their bunks while Capt. Breeyawn and The Braidster take 30 minute shifts hand steering down the waves all night long. It's a really intense experience but Delos is a strong boat and takes very good care of us. This is our story, a story of three souls sailing around the world.
