The AV Abel Tasman super trawler is currently docked at Port Lincoln in South Australia and will be banned from fishing in Australian waters. The average Australian commercial fishing boat is around 25 metres long. The super trawler is 143 meters long and tows a 300 meter long net which opens to 200 meters wide. The super trawler has a 18,000 tonne quota, roughly half of the allowable catch in the Small Pelagic Fishery. The restrictions are based on the impact it can have and on the bycatch of other marine wildlife.
