How does a chick that's never cut anything get on a crew evaluating cutters?
-
Do we know if the buckers intention was for the piece that pinned him to either stay still or roll the other direction or go straight up. I wonder what made him so sure it would not fall back and pin him like it did?Sad that no one else said "wait a minute here what if"

You reckon he died instantly or was slowly asphixiated by tree? Either way R.I.P :(

Well done. May your report save others and keep this sad loss of life from happening again.

if he would of stood two feet to the right when making the cut and extending his arms out as far as possible to the left, he would of been safe.

Helicopter available but wasn't used .Why ? .Too much of a man to use a helicopter Way more macho to go in boots and all and cut away and die .Who's to blame for this ? Was it a penny pinching boss who wouldn't get a helicopter and I presume you would find the boss risking life and limb . To me it stinks of a penny pinching boss . His team should tell him to fuck off .

Absolute shame in the loss of life of a hard working person. My prayers and thoughts go to the family of the faller. It is a stark reminder of just how deadly trees can be and why fallers get decent money to remove trees and limbs. Thank you for posting this. I will send this along to a friend of mine who removes trees.

Got here by accident and learned a thing or 2

Hindsight is a great thing. I notice she suggested a helicopter could have been used. I can imagine the boss agreeing to pay for and use a helicopter.

Listen as monotone Melissa explains how a guy horribly loses his life as though she were giving instructions on folding a sheet.

I worked for the U.S. forest service from 1986 to 1989. One of the more unpleasant chores I had to do was "relieve" trees that had been bulldozed into huge piles like matchsticks. These piles were hundreds of feet long and could be anywhere from 20 to 50 feet wide and 10 feet tall. This was a result of the bulldozers cutting a fire line during a forest fire that needed to be stopped or redirected. If these giant log jams where left untouched and the rainy season started to soften the soil piled up around them, there was a very good chance the logs could snap out of the jam like a spring under pressure and easily kill someone who was working in the area. Pinched saw blades were a common occurrence and you needed a backup saw to cut the pinched one out. It was rather difficult to read where the tension is on the logs because you couldn't always see the entire log, so you spent your day being very very cautious. It was one of the more dangerous jobs I have had and I am happy that I no longer have to do it.

I don't like the idea of needed some one else to tell me how to cut a tree down. I would greatly appreciate advice from a more experienced person, but in the end it is your own life that you have to watch out for or others closes enough for said tree to fall on.

I remember a felling job many years ago that I walked away from. It was way above my experience level. Later, I heard a man was hurt badly trying to do what I could not. . There are many things that can go wrong quickly with a saw in your hands. Noisy and rough, it is very skilled work.
