I worked on trawlers out of Grimsby way back in the late 60s. We took everything that we could, and the general mentality was... conservation be damned. Anyone with half a brain knew that the day wasn't far off, when fish would be few . All due to endless plunder of the sea. Little fishing there now. Ditto the cod fishing off Newfoundland. Barely any cod there at all and there has been a moratorium there for over a decade. Seems we never really learn. Kinda sad.

This clip shows some of the work of catching and processing fish aboard a deep sea fishing sterntrawler, the Arctic Ranger, in the mid 1970s. The Ranger was a sister ship of the Gaul , lost while fishing in 1974 , with all 36 crew, aboard. A clip of the investigation of the sinking of the Gaul is posted to YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eq5X8YL8ji4 . Commercial fishing consistently experiences one of the highest occupational fatality rates. In 2006, commercial fishermen had the most dangerous job in the United States, with an annual fatality rate that was 36 times greater than the rate of all U.S. workers. For more information on the severe hazards faced by workers in commercial fishing and methods for improving safety, go to the US NIOSH Commercial Fishing Safety website at http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/fishi... .
