Check out this article where a catamaran runs over a log and loses both rudders: http://www.para-anchor.com/reports/news_letter.pdf

Really do not like the use of locking turns on a cleat. One of my students put a locking turn on a cleat when securing the boat in a storm, all the other cleats being secured with OXXO Getting ready to leave the next morning we had to use a marlin spike to get the locking turn to release, all the other securings held perfectly and untied easily. The point is that a locking turn is a pain and not needed. Interesting idea to use a drogue for steering but only if I have lost my rudder entirely otherwise I think I will steer using my emergency steering tiller attached to the top of my rudder stock or perhaps use my sails to steer. Always good to learn something new though, thank you.

I would throw that Lehr overboard when you get off shore.

Bullshit, why in the calm weather? Stupids.

Like the fact that you included all your adjustments for the specific boat you were testing. Next challenge is to shoot a sequence in 30+ knots and at least moderate seas with gear pre-measured from earlier fair weather testing. Crew in harnesses and tethers, reacting to boats movement while they prep drogue for deployment, deploy, use it to steer boat, then retrieve.
Questions:
Would you consider heaving-to for deployment and or retrieval?
How about use of emergency tiller in conjunction with drogue?
At what wind speed, sea state to you recommend adding a 10 lb mushroom to the drogue?

33 minute training video demonstrates two popular approaches that give racers and cruisers more than one option when steering a disabled vessel with a damaged or lost rudder. Each drogue is deployed according to the manufactures recommendations with lots of new techniques by Zack Smith for improving the conventional set up plus a revolutionary new Shark Bridle setup that uses no chains, long scope or spinnaker poles.
