So any suggestions on a first ship? I have a Saitek X52 stick coming in this weekend and I want to start getting into this game and I'm still a little lost with all the research I've been doing. I almost don't want to keep the game open in fear of getting destroyed by someone after hours of progress.

When looking for scoopable stars, remember 'KGB FOAM'. Class A, B, F, G, K, M, and O are all fuel stars. Much better than risking heat damage 'dipping your toes' to see if you can scoop. And explorers and ultra-long-range fliers must be very careful of accumulated damage.
