Thank you I have no snipe issues with mine either. Snipe on this machine is 100% on the operator!

I 'liked; this one because it appears to confirm my assumption that spending the money to buy the Shelix add-on was not cost effective and buying a machine with a factory installed Shelix or equivalent might be a better option - if I could sell my 735 after all these folks finished bashing it! Geeze!

heh heh...do do

I have decided that while I am still a novice and I need furniture in my house all of my projects will be "Farm Style". This way I can blame any flaws and screw-ups that happen on it being "character of the piece" and "it is supposed to look well used". Also a great time to learn how to mend different flaws. I use a PorterCable planer and it has about 2" of snipe on both ends, unless (and only sometimes) I run boards back to back. I try to account for that before doing any final cuts, but sometimes if they go in slightly crooked I still see a little bit of snipe. This just increases the "character" of my finished piece.

I don't have one but is that gauge adjustable?

Createthis
If you look at the holes in the depth gauge that the mounting screws go through they are slotted so you will be able to adjust it to make up the difference caused by the different cutting head. -
the snipe is caused by the roller pressure.and that cutter head costs almost as much as the machine.......so basically you wind up paying for an upgrade that does what???
-
You said it's quieter after turning it on, but before you ran any wood through it. Really? Just running is noticeably quieter? Is there any reason for that other than the smaller diameter cutter head?
-
I acquired a Robland X31 that has a 12" jointer/planer combo on it, and they make a Shelix head for it, but it's about a grand, which is more than I paid for the beast of a machine. Someday...

When you installed the new cutter and found that it was 1/16 smaller did you go back and adjust the height of the infeed and out feed?
-
Snipe's not an attribute of the cutter head; it's an attribute of the pressure rollers.
-
I'm going to get this head for my planer. I run a lot of Maple and those steel knives do not last long enough to make it worth it. Didn't expect it to be quieter even when not feeding.
You might be able to eliminate that small amount of snipe by adjusting your in-feed and out-feed tables. Make sure they are adjusted so that they are about a 1/16 inch or so higher on the ends than they are next to the bed.
Great video, going to watch the install video. -
Suddenly a beard appeared! :-D
