On Cape Cod, when mariners are in distress, the folks on land make every attempt to rescue those at sea as quickly as possible. To maintain the highest level of responsiveness, the fire department responds to each call as if it were the most important call in the world -- unless advised otherwise. In this case, the unknowns were such that a rapid response was required by the boat crew driving from HQ to the dock with lights and sirens.

Why was the fire department dispatched to this. I hardly see how two fellows paddling a sailboat warranted an emergency response using flashing lights and sirens. Wouldn't a commercial towing service such as Sea Tow or TowBoatUS have been a perfectly acceptable solution?

I thought they were doing ok. Once they decided to paddle west rather than in towards shore. However, I think they would have been hard pressed to make swan river on an outgoing tide.

personally, I think the paddle would have improved their moral fibre....
Fire Department rescues two off Dennisport DENNISPORT -- Around 5 p.m. Sunday a catamaran lost its mast off the coast of Dennisport in the area of Haigis Beach along Old Wharf Road. An ambulance crew from Dennis Fire headquarters deployed to the beach while another crew was dispatched to the department's south-side rescue boat -- Marine 118, a 22-foot rigid hull inflatable. The two men on board the disabled Cat were in the process of attempting to paddle the vessel to the beach when Marine 118 arrived on scene with Captain Richard Farrenkopf at the helm. Rescue personnel threw a line to the cat's crew and safely towed the craft and its mast to its home port of Swan River. There were no reported injuries. Story and photos by Kevin Morley/CWN
