Out numbering ones opponent as allied bolshevik forces did Germany was the decisive factor in winning the war, not allied technology.

At 18.40 it states that there was only one bomber with the effective range to provide full air cover, the B24 Liberator - Not strictly true as the Lancaster beat it by 430 miles, 2100 miles against the Lancasters 2530 Miles. Good documentary though.

Is that Sean Bean?

No mention of escort carriers. Interesting. Not deemed relevant?

The war effort was the United Nations, all of this childish my gang better than your gang nonsense where 'facts' are taken from boys own hero comics. Sometimes a moment spent in research can show just how off the mark some comments are. Many actions were fought with more than one nation involved using shared technology and resuorces:

in reality the Russians actually were the decisive factor in the winning of the 2nd world war

The PBY aircraft with depth charges fixed to their wings, more than any other tactic/hunter-killer groups, did more to turn the tide against the U-Boats in 1943 than anything else. When our DE Task Group 22.5 began duty in the North Atlantic in early 1944, things had essentially been reduced to a milk run, even though we lost one sister ship, USS Leopold, and one 100,000 barrel oil tanker (aviation gasoline actually), US PanPennsylvania.

What was the cost to the Allies, of Ireland's neutrality?
What did The Irish expect to get out of a German ruled Europe?
Did they really expect to remain unoccupied? -
Is that the voice of Sean bean I do hear?

Admiral Dan Gallery was the head of a US Navy task force that went around trying to find and sink German submarines. He received a message from Task Force Ten set up by Admiral King (read "Force Ten") and ended up capturing the German Submarine the U-505 (read "Can Do" by Admiral Dan Gallery) two day before D-Day ! Admiral Gallery task force had a baby flattop aircraft carrier to help search and attack enemy submarines. The carriers had old airplanes that were not needed at the front lines. And you can visit the U-505 in Chicago at the MSI (Dan Gallery grew up in Chicago). tjl

Okay.... @18:05 the conclusion that the allies were losing in 1943 is faulty. He ignores the fact that the Germans were losing U-Boats at an even greater rate, with an even lower ability to replace loses. This is clear from history...and he also ignores the fact the allies had a clear tech advantage at this time and simply were not losing CREWS at nearly the rate the Germans had/were and would continue to lose crews. He ignores a lot IMHO...

The entire bit about Operation Drumbeat has always, always been over-stated. The US simply did not have the escorts required at the time, nor the manpower IN PLACE. Period. So, of course it would be better hunting there...for awhile. The situation was never like: "Oh gee...we are Americans, we will just do it this way cuz we knows best!"
I get so tired of hearing this type of BS from Euro productions as they make excuses after excuses, rationalize away and completely ignore some of the insanely stupid things the British, French, Poles and other allies did in their first 12 months of the largest war ever known (if they even lasted that long against an old enemy they saw coming a mile away...) -
...the main target was the merchant fleet.. Yes, but after we, commissioned enough about 500. faster Destroyer Escorts (plus American built frigates to you Brits), not corvetts at 16 knots that were outrun by submerged U boats, to protect the convoys and you broke the German code used to rally the wolf packs, U boats became almost like Japanese suicide planes used in the Pacific. Many lost were, while the US poured millions of tons of fuel and supplies into Europe.
My uncle often told me of the battles and escort missions he endured in the frigid N. Atlantic. Breaking ice off the D.E. to keep it up right, and long cold nights on watch, interrupted with violent encounters of torpedoes vs depth charges. -
