War is hell. Unfortunetly it will always happen. Times of 1939-1945 are gone, but dont get too comfortable.... it will happen again and again and again.... But thats not my point here. I dont know how to put this so maybe i will just say it stright - i read bunch of books about naval warfare during ww2 and dont get me wrong i dispise nazi germans and so on but cut the politics - i think during that war, sea theatre of operations was place where you could find the most of human dignity during war. Like.... i respect u-boot crews.... totally. And same for Allies navy. They werent ppl who want to shoot someone in the head, see them guts falling out and shit.... they just want to sink certian ship and hope that their crew will be picked up. You know what i mean?

It depicts both the excitement of battle and the tedium of the fruitless hunt, and shows the men serving aboard U-boats as ordinary individuals with a desire to do their best for their comrades and their country. The story is based on an amalgamation of the exploits of the real U-96, a Type VIIC-class U-boat commanded by Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock, one of Germany's top U-boat "tonnage aces" during the war. One of Petersen's goals was to guide the audience through "a journey to the edge of the mind" (the film's German tagline Eine Reise ans Ende des Verstandes), showing "what war is all about."
