I love that Christmas Cactus behind you. I never could get mine to get that big or bloom like that.

We moved aboard our boat 4 1/2 months ago with our two young kids and huge service dog. We've gone 1300 miles from TX to Key West and we will set off for Cuba in a few weeks. Next year we plan to sell the boat and switch to sail and continue cruising the world. We hope to start our circumnavigation in a couple years after we've explored the Caribbean! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QpAMvKhFzU

So glad you guys made it. Just watched the video. Two recommendations, dodger and bimini. I've never trusted a tiller pilot. P.S. Dramamine... gutsy trip guys!!!

For the longterm bluewater cruiser consider roughly as a minimum per month as follows: Food, entertainment, internet etc. US-$ 600.-- per person / healthinsurance per person US-$ 800.-- / Boatmaintenance, repairs US-$ 300.-- / fees, charges etc. US 400.-- / plus travelexpenses other than with your boat. I'd seriously consider US-$ 2'500.-- as a adequate budget.

Thank You!

Very helpful info. Thank you

As usual, even though sailers spend an inordinate amount of time motoring, they refuse to talk about fuel and engine maintenance costs... In my opinion, fuel and engine maintenance must be a substantial portion of monthly budget. thanks....
-
Great info. Do you think your sails kept your cost down in SE Alaska? Or would the right diesel powered cruiser have been the equivalent? I run an aluminum around the salish sea and am planning my escape north. So hard to decide between sail and cruiser. In a perfect world a nauticat but....

Thank you for the maintenance discussion around 4 minutes. $100/mo avg. over many years.

if you'd like information on
how to save money anytime dining on princess cruises look at Banfan Crazy Cruise Saver (search on google)? our partner suggested it interesting -
You guys left Sitka because the moorage was too high. Harbor fees sound like the main expense. Could you just throw out anchor and use you dinghy to go get groceries in towns and not pay mooring fees?
-
You must be saving a lot more in Alaska because you anchor out a lot even though the moorings are cheap there? Did you ever skip from anchorage to anchorage in Hawaii? Thanks
-
2:36 What? $79 a month for a boat mooring in Alaska?? In Southern California (Orange County) that would cost at least $350 a month for the marinas.
-
How much does it cost? How much do you have? LOL
-
Great video, thanks! I read your blog post which had a few more details, and noticed you left out insurance, gas costs, and entertainment costs.
It sounds like you forgo insurance - is that common, and are you concerned about catastrophic disasters (like a hurricane) that could destroy your investment in your boat? (which might be 50k or more, just guessing based on what a typical small boat would be equipped with for offshore passage-making).
Gas budget for ocean cruising vs coastal cruising vs docked for winter would be interesting.
Obviously entertainment costs vary from nothing to a lot, depending on the person, but everyone needs a way to occupy their free time. And especially when visiting new places (Hawaii, SF, Alaska, etc) I would imagine you'd want to do some things ashore - how did cost of different places compare? -
well said ty for help:)

Good information! We're not living aboard yet, but plan to in a year. Money is always a concern, but plan on living as simply as possible. Love being on the hook and when the money runs low we'll look for work. I think that's how we'll manage the money question.
-
Now everybody is going to want to move to kake. Lol

We got a great comment in email from Shawn:
"It is my strongly held position that responsible budgeting based on their own needs, style of cruising, boat and goals is part of the work that a "dreamer" must do to graduate to a "doer"."
Thanks Shawn. -
I like using open source (anything) for support. I'll research what your using and download it. Thank you, kindly, for sharing all this.
