Great movie thanks for posting this. Tyrone Power actually filmed this before reporting for duty in the Marine Corps as a transport pilot. He was actually involved in combat operations and did a few short films for the USO when back in the States. He died of a heart attack at the age of 44 as result of a plane crash when he was in the Pacific. The doctors had warned Power of being too physical. His injuries were not severe enough to warrant a medical discharge. Tyrone Power remained in the Marine Corps Reserve. He was promoted to Captain in May 1951. However, he was not called back to active service during the Korean War. Power remained in the Marine Corps Reserve until his death in November 1958. At the time of his passing, Tyrone Power was a Major. He was buried with full military honors, including a full Marine Corps honor guard from MCAS El Toro.

This movie and many others like it were probably propaganda movies. These types of movies were needed to keep this country united during one of the most horrible wars.

The woman was a hoe. If she had any class she would of told the fellow she had a man and he would of been gone.

Paul Curse, what you have written is very true. I first saw this movie in 1945, and I still enjoy all of it.

Interesting fact: For more than 18 months at the start of US involvement in WWII the USN sent commanders into battle with defective torpedoes because testing the design would cost 10 grand a torp. They were unaware that the torpedoes would run 10+ feet deeper than set, causing them to pass harmlessly under their targets. They also had a detonator which would distort upon impact with the target and not detonate. Sometimes the torps would detonate prematurely. Sometimes they would run a circular course and hit the vessel which launched it. The ordinance bureau refused to listen to reports from the field, the USN brass ended the command careers of many good men by charging them with charges like cowardice, negligence, dereliction of duty.
When the Navy finally admitted the defects were real they hired Einstein to determine the cause of the detonator problems, but refused to listen to him.
Subs litterally went to sea without a single properly functional torpedo. Imagine firing a broken torp at a DD who is about to eat your lunch. -
This movie sucks. Too many inconsistencies as I can tell.
1. The sub captain tells his girl when he's shipping out. Want happened to loose lips sink ships? Even though you see a poster on the sub warning against it.
2. Why are they on patrol in the N. Atlantic as shown on the map. Wouldn't they be patrolling on the surface until contacts are made keeping the batteries charged?
3. That first contact shows the freighter sitting still in the mid Atlantic instead of being underway.
4. They would've crash dived as soon as the freighter opened fire and not wait for Tyrone Powers to row back to the sub.
5. After ordering the sub to dive, the captain asks for the depth under the keel. I would think he'd have enough situational awareness to know that already. 15 phantoms (90 feet) and they're in the middle of the North Atlantic.
6. Why did they hide from a single frieghter? They are slow and they were barely moving while dropping depth charges.
7. Where the hell did they get the 2 bodies to jettison from the torp tubes? Actually this maneuver was rarely used or successful. But seems to be a staple of bad sub movies.
There is much more, but after the first 45 minutes into the movie I gave up. I think I'll watch Operation Petticoat, at least there is no pretense of realism in that movie. -
I was surprised that there was a black man as one of the hero's.
-
Love character actor James Gleason, appearing here as "The Chief". He must have made a hundred movies, always playing the gruff, irascible Irishman with a heart of gold. Knowing that he has a heart condition, he sacrifices himself in order to save a shipmate. Great stuff!

Don't waste your time. Shitty movie

Propaganda yes but I like1. Beginning with a PT squadron at speed (I like visuals)2. Marlin/ Mackerel class sub. These two boats were an attempt at a downsized sub (smaller than a fleet boat) but weren't used for actual war patrols (so available for movie) 3.Brief color glimpse of a 4 pipe destroyer. ( I love them)4.Really good clarity and Technicolor.5. TP actually left Hollywood to serve as a Naval Officer during the war.
-
Lol where are all the black people?
-
Why a PT boat captain is already wearing dolphins, before sub school and qualifying on the boat turned me off. I quit watching what may have been a fine film. Us submariners call BS when we see BS. SSBN627Gold crew, 1970-1973.

Against his personal preference, PT boat commander Ward Stewart is made executive officer of the submarine USS Corsair. On leave before sailing, he meets schoolteacher Jean Hewlett and gives her a romantic rush...unaware that she's the sweetheart of Dewey Connors, his new commander. At sea, the men bond while fighting German Q-ships. When will they discover their mutual romantic rivalry? Will it interfere with a spectacular commando raid on a secret German base?
