Originally published January 7, 2015 At least three tourists were killed when a ship carrying around 100 passengers sank off the coast of Costa Rica on Thursday. The catamaran departed Marina Los Suenos in Costa Rica for the popular Tortuga Island on Thursday morning. The ship was carrying 98 tourists and ten crewmen. The sea was choppy as the country was battered by exceptionally strong winds. The catamaran started taking on water sometime during the voyage. As the boat began to list, passengers attempted to balance the vessel by moving to the other side but the boat capsized soon after. Costa Rica authorities said 101 people were rescued and they are still looking for two people. One of the survivors told AFP that the crew did not give out life vests to passengers until the boat had started to sink. The boat was not carrying more passengers than its capacity, as it was permitted to take 120 passengers and ten crew members.
