fishing near the wrecks for this fish

No wonder there's no fish left

As much as I have become more for fish conservation these days, I do miss working on a commercial boat.
Great video, thanks.
As much of the negative feedback is about the way of fishing, I would point out that as remaining independent of the EU, Norway was able to protect its fish stocks. The Norwegians actually MANAGE their fisheries and as such, enjoy a very prolific cod fishery as well as many other species. Rather than blaming the methods, perhaps complaints would be better suited, electing people who listen to INDEPENDENT scientists who aren't on the payroll of the govt and when they say no more of a given species, that advice actually followed rather than carrying on fishing for them.
Just my thoughts on the negative stuff being bandied around in the comments. -
you could fish the irish sea for a week and not get any cod that size these days.

I trawled back in the early 70's. Hate to say but all the good grounds were empty due to overfishing. No fish meant going further. Ended up being chased by Icelandic gunboats and I didn't blame them one bit. Overfishing was a problem then and now the problem is taking everything that swims in the sea . Sad.

Looks like he`s been close to the wrecks with the Pollock & Congas?

The only thing that's killed the fish is Governments! Like Corexist in the gulf of Mexico and Fukushima???
-
Mooi!

Trawlers suck

respect

They were mostly Ling not conger, some will have been but mostly ling are the ones that will almost always be caught up in the mesh of the cod end.
-
That's a demise of a species before our very eye's, sustainable fishing is clearly a myth?
-
The tounge of the cod is the best part of the fish ! Cod tounge stew/soup is the best ever !
-
Have you tried fresh fried octopus ? It's great.
-
Try custard with your fish fingers !
-
Trawlers suck, I wish they'd ban them!

Thanks for your reply well dont get me wrong but i love to hear irish and N. Irish boats in our water i just wish all the fishing been done by french spanish portugese and even wales and england stopped but thats part of our e.u deal to many outsiders fishing our sea and thats killing the industry should only be irish boats in irish waters with funding and grants from the governments. I got the video up on my phone are the crew from diffrent countries sounded like it

She is from Kilkeel N-Ireland. I think that today she is the only trawler from N-I fishing for whitefish in the Irish Sea. The video is from 2003, then there were 20-30 trawlers white fishing there. Cod "saving" is killing the industry.

A fishing trip with the trawler "Sparkling Sea" in July 2003. She is fishing with a semi-pelagic trawl, towed few meters over the bottom. Cod are seen on the echo sounder, the opening of the trawl is 15-20 m. Contrary to a common bottom trawl, the semi-pelagic catches cod which is off bottom, eating herring and other pelagic fish. A scientific report was writing about this fishing trip and fisheries in the Irish Sea. The report is here: http://www.mmedia.is/~jonkr/english/irsea.pdf
