very interesting video thanks for sharing

I like our view points, however for me I've been going back and forth this this same question! the reasons why I'm thinking of getting a cat, is that I am getting older (45) but already had one knee surgery and don't like the concept of climbing up and down a ladder, you don't have to spend the extra money on a swing or trying to find a shoal draft that meets your specs. Ryan have you checked with the insurance cost difference between the two?

My Prius is a monohull

Good video

Very nice overview. I have sailed both and constantly debate which to own. Currently own a 43' center cockpit mono with keel centerboard. This configuration gives us a draft similar to a 43' cat (4'6") and a large master suite. I do envy the large cockpit on the cats. The center cockpit does give a large stern deck that we use for ice chest, etc. While our boat did not come with davits we added them at a cost of $1,500 (Martek in St Petersburg, Fl). My final thoughts on the two is if we are doing long passages where large seas and extreme weather can be experienced I will stick with a mono. If we plan on mostly costal cruising (US to Caribbean and such) I will probably move to a cat.

Ive had cats and mono hulls cats win at anchor but monos win on long distance cruising and safety

I'm curious what you think about trimarans.....
-
Couple of things: Catamarans can usually get into more shallow water. Now, there are monohulls with lift up keel if mast is folded down. That rare type of monohull can fit into river channels (cruising on engine only).

Highly recommend you check out Nikki and Jason http://www.gonewiththewynns.com/ if you haven't already.
Having just gone through what you're planning they can probably give you a good idea of what to expect cost wise. -
The one thing I think was missing is comparing comfort/ease in handling for a couple, as well as safety in that regard. Thank you for sharing this video I found it very informative.

Really great. Thx

Cat...for comfort, space and privacy.

OMG......did you get anything blatantly wrong ??? what did you get right ??? cruzing cats have only been around for 15 years WTF??? you ever heard of Catalac's.....?? over 600 built starting in mid 70's most still on the water....Never has a hull come out of the water...Tom Lack (builder and designer) has offered 10,000 L's if you could get a hull out of the water......Long story short...only thing mono's have over cats is windward ability...and a lot of newer cats blow the fking doors off any mono on any point of sail...so you really haven't done all your homework.....yes, cats cost more....but you get so much more...depending on what cat you are talking about...you can overload the shit out of it...and it will still perform at least the same as most mono's ...since you clarified from the beginning that it was a cruising boat and not racing.....when it comes the practical part, like living aboard, there is no comparison, if you are in a slip, with no movement, then you can compare..on the hook ??? mono's are a PAIN in the ass.....always rolling....ALWAYS..you can't leave anything sitting anywhere...unless you are talking 45' and above.,...now what you say about the arguments between the two being like religious is true...but thats only if the monohull sailor has never spent time on multihull !!!LOL OK, here's the good part....I am a 70 year old man....have 4 alantic crossings in, 1 pacific, from ASIA to the west coast of America, 101 days at sea, no stops, all over the Med, the caribbean from Granada to New england 4 times, West coast, Nor Cal to the Panama canal and all points in between, have owned 15 plus boats....currently living in the caribbean on a CAT.....most of the sailing happened on a monohull......Catamarans rule.... Keeping in mind the first sail boats on the planet were all multihulls !! do some more homework....monohulls came into being when the white man wanted to rape pillage and plunder the world and needed a boat that they could fill up with gold !!!!!.....mono-hulls are cheaper.....cheaper being the key word here....you get what you pay for.....OK, any hulls are better than none......all LOVE

Wow, you should do more resurch... most of you points are to simple to explain the differences.

I like the speed and space on a Catamaran. Though a Monohull will right itself if ever knocked down. I would feel safer in extreme weather on a single hull. How does a motor yacht fair if knocked over?
-
Justice for catamarans :)

The biggest thing that you didn't cover, in my opinion, was draft. A monohull has a deeper draft verses a catamaran. Catamarans can go into much shallower water than monohulls.

We're not sailing experts, but we've done our homework on the major differences between catamarans and monohulls. This video shares that info for those of you who might be curious. For those of you who are experienced, what did we miss? Did we get anything blatantly wrong?
An overweight cat is a dog???? Is that a Mayberry thing?
