Proves my theory- Catamarans make people bad singers...
-
1) Mono in higher wind
2) Mono sailing into the wind (not on a reach)
3) Mono carrying a bit too much sail
4) Sea conditions are rougher in Monohull shot
Ergo: Multihull propaganda footage!
And who can help but see a widely distributed YouTube video of a couple buying their first (bluewater) catamaran, complete with pergo floor? The wife loved the 'kitchen,' thought the 'bedroom' was big with a big 'bed,' and the 'bathroom' too was nice. The salesman/broker (who is an avid monohull-bashing rich Aussie selling floating dual-hull condos to this sort of neophyte ... and makes jokes about monohulls being 1/2 a boat) tries to show them the access to wiring and seacocks. Too funny. Oh, she just loved the "big windows' on the boat, too! : )
If you've ever seen a cruising cat turtle, then you know why I would NEVER trust my life to a "bluewater" Catamaran. I am sure they are great entertainment venues and their owners can certainly host amazing barbecues, but fast off apparent wind is nothing, when your best angle 60º from the direction you need to beat to?
"Living on a tilt" has its charms. If you broach or pitchpole a cat you're basically dead! Who cares how big your "kitchen" is then? : ) -
That's strange. Neither of those boats were flying on their foils! 18 knots wind should be enough for that.
-
Surprised anyone would choose to sail around the world on a mono hull . They should all watch this video
-
That one guy didn't know the chords to the song....
-
LOL
-
The monohull is sailing hard to the wind and the catamaran has the wind from a little behind as you can see from the waves. You compare apples with pears as we say in German.

Owner of a catamaran -
hahahahaha great comparison. I love it.

Close hauled vs beam reach? Can't handle obnoxious noise on multi.
-
im sold
-
You haven't lived till you've heeled a Catamaran lol
-
Rolls eyes proceeds to sail traditional style monohull...
-
Love that ! Have always preferred Multi's over Mono's.
-
Wait. Do all cats sail with bad singing or just that one? Jusssst kidding!
-
that is one advanced 5 month old to already be a toddler
-
Of cause a cat is more stable, but if you are looking for an exhilarating sail cutting through the water, a monohull is a completely different experience.
-
I would also suggest the reason the 43 footer was going so slow if because it was healed over so hard. healing might be fun, but fast it is not. Set the sails for the conditions with minimal healing, and the boat will move much faster.
-
I'm not convinced you were in 18 Knots. We were in about that on my monohull, hand my wife had to hold her hat on, because of the strength of the wind. Had nothing to do with the boat. Or maybe it did, because we were going about twice the speed the 43 footer was going. We also were sailing flat, because that is how we sail.
Don't get me wrong, I also have a Hobie 14, and am well aware of the ease of handling strong wind and rough water, but from the evidence of people's hair and clothing, I don't believe the wind speed. -
@Norman, we were close hauled on this shot.
-
was you going a bit down wind???
