Sometimes getting in too close interferes with the boat they're trying good photo footage of...( Back off & use a zoom lens, eh?...)
-
That was painful to watch
-
Wow you guys are bad at sailing
-
If the main sail went into an uncontrolled gybe while the second person was boarding and getting seated it would've ripped the mast off the sailboat
-
Put a Hobie Bob on the mast
-
is that an FJ or a 420? it looks more like an FJ though.
-
Way too quick of a jibe.
-
u should of done it qucker im a kid and i can sail on them and i did it for 2 days so its a fail
-
420

checkout the video called the apple that hurts

Was the main sheet cleated? Because it looked like the boat was still heeling after they got it righted. And nobody was there for the scoop (when one person rights the boat and the other gets pulled into the boat). We had capsize recovery the other day... my arms still hurt :P We also were working on kinetics so we didn't have a sail or jib and the outhaul and main halyard untied... we had to capsize the boat to fix it.

That's why you buy those mast-bubble things Hyde makes so that the boat doesn't capsize! They really are a good investment.

Capsizing is fun

no. they capsized because they breached sail. watch the video closely. the accidental jibe was so violent that, when the boom flew over, the boat heeled far enough to let the boom hit the water. the underwater fin does not really effect heeling that way. a deep, skinny fin will cause a boat to heel more than a long, shallow fin, while under way, because it's lift is down lower. however, without forward motion, the board doesn't have any 'bite'. it won't stop leeward motion or cause you to trip.
-
...opposite their sails. the jib was already luffing and the main was beginning to waver near the head.
-
a few points, they almost turned up, into you, because you were much too close to their windward side, considering the wind conditions. pointing up is one way of spilling wind and avoiding capsize. if you were going to motor that close to them, it would have been safer, for all concerned, if you had been on their lee side. it looks like they were sailing by the lee, for a minute or two, just before that accidental jibe took them over. I could be wrong about that, but the boat was heeling...

As a fully-qualified sailing instructor in the UK, we teach our clients that the first step in any capsize would be to get to the back of the boat to ensure safety in case of a total inversion. Despite the boat here starting to invert, the crew remain under it - not a good idea in my experience!!

Funny how he is holding on, drifting, then he just stands up in 3 feet of water lol.

They we sailing down wind on a run correct? So the centreboard should have been further up. I think part of the reason why they capped was when they had the accidental gybe the boat "tripped" up on the board.

Just some raw video I thought I'd toss up to get things started here. It was a relativity windy day and, though I don't usually get the chance to pull out my camera in these conditions, I managed to capture a full capsize and recovery (as well as them catching a gust and almost rounding up into me).
