They had intended for Gene Pitney to record it after they had written his hits "Only Love Can Break a Heart" and "Twenty Four Hours from Tulsa, but he declined to record it, telling Bacharach "it's not one of your better ones" Bacharach then recorded it himself with an orchestra, chorus, and uncredited vocals by female session singers the Breakaways. It was also given to Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas to record was it released at about the same time as Bacharach's own version with both recordings entering the UK chart the same week in May 1965. Bacharach's version reached No 4 and Kramers version No 12 .Dionne Warwick's cover in 1966 reached No 22 on the US Billboard Hot 100 source : Wikipedia

And I'm a all time progressive rock fan with the complete works of led zepplin amongst my collection of hard hitting heavy metal music but man I do love slipping off the denim and leather to relax with a nice cup of hot chocholate and just melt into the tranquility of childhood memorabilia inspired by the many songs not only by Bacharach but many others of this fantastic generation. ... My ol Nan (god bless) used to tell me these would be the best years of my life. How right she was.

Bacharach/David. Best singer/songwriter combination ever. And I'm supposed to be a Beatles fan, Which I've been ever since the sixties. And will always be so, but That Duo... Incredible.
-
They want to have a tribute to Hal David who passed away last weekend.
-
One of the most beautiful melodies of all time....
-
Remember this when I was 16 and in love .Used to stand on a wooden bridge and gaze at the stars and wonder what was in the future .Now I am 62 and am still dreaming when I hear this .

In the liner notes from my 3 disc Burt Bacharach collection it says it's a "three-girl chorus" with orchestra and chorus conducted by Burt. What it doesn't mention is that the guitar player on this session was Jimmy Page!
