To answer some of the questions I keep seeing in the comments section:
Why did the smaller ship turn into the bigger ship?
They probably didn't. In fact they were probably turning as hard as they could the other way but due to the hydrodynamic effects of ships they couldn't. There is a huge positive pressure cushion on the BEKS ship's bow and a smaller positive pressure cushion on the smaller ships stern. When those too positive pressures met they collectively pushed the stern of the smaller ship to starboard which swung the rest of the ship to port.
Why didn't the BEKS ship reverse engines?
Simple answer is that they probably couldn't at that speed due to the nature of their engines (most likely a slow speed diesel which generally can't go astern unless your vessel is under 6 knots) and even if they did it wouldn't have mattered. It takes the BEKS ship at least several ship lengths to maybe over a mile to stop even at full astern, especially when fully loaded.
Overtaking ships is a very dangerous maneuver and the closer you are the more dangerous it is. They definitely shouldn't have allowed an overtaking situation at that distance, but I can't cast too much judgement on the officer's aboard the ships b/c I don't know what led up to this point. There would definitely have been an investigative report done on the incident if anyone is so inclined as to go find it.

That Beks ship is such a bitch
Turkish bulk carrier collision to Vietnamese cargo vessel on Singapore Two ships (a bulk carrier and a cargo ship) collide in the Straits of Singapore. The Singaporean Coastguard was called to rescue crew members of the smaller vessel. The two boats, which appeared to be bulk carriers, were reportedly transiting the Straits of Singapore when one cargo ship passed too close to the other. The Singaporean coast guard was then called in to rescue the crew of the smaller boat, which reportedly began sinking after the accident. No casualties were reported. While passing the Strait of Singapore, the "Beks Halil" was in collision with a smaller bulk carrier which was suddenly veering across its course. Video footage shows the smaller vessel veering to port and across the course of the "Beks Halil" which was underway from Haldia to Navlakhi at that time. The smaller cargo vessel was hit on port side in the aft after it was unable to stop or alter course for the larger ship. The Singapore Coast Guard was called to the incident but there were no reports of any injuries. It's every captain's worst nightmare. A 57,000-tonne bulk carrier steaming out of Singapore suddenly has a smaller vessel veering across its path. The incident - caught on video by crew members from another ship nearby - happened in the crowded Singapore Strait, which leads in and out of the world's busiest port. The footage shows the smaller vessel veering to port (its left) and across the course of the much larger ship. The bulk carrier nudges the cargo vessel The collision is inevitable, as the massive BEKS line tanker is unable to stop or alter course. The Singapore Coast Guard was called to the incident but there were no reports of any injuries.
