Yeah, I'd say it's 30min lifespan was mostly due to mass. It just wasn't big enough. Compare how long an ice cube would hold up in the ocean against a glacier. Surface area would be the most significant factor towards the melting rate. Increasing the volume while keeping the surface area as low as possible would increase it's lifespan.
Another major factor in this scenario however, is the friction of the water against the craft. The high speed water and matter floating through it would tear pieces off over time. If building a ship like this meant to go at a decent clip, it'd probably be prudent to shield the underwater bow with something else.
Oh, and make the deck out of something solid as well if possible. Leaks wouldn't be such a problem then. Only the gradual loss of buoyancy.
Oh yes, one more point against a speed boat made this way. Form is very important, but there's no real way to ensure that each half of your pykrete craft melts in an even shape. Thus, later on during it's lifespan, you'll probably get some pretty bad deflection, which at higher speeds could easily destroy the boat and possibly injure the occupants. Like the WW2 idea, a design approaching "floating island" is probably your best bet with this. -
If they made the walls thicker it would have worked. Recall surface area to volume ratio. q.e.d.

and if they'd used another material for the hull, using ice/newspaper just to make the general super cheap form.... ?
-
My guess would be that the newspapers compromised the pykrete's low thermal conductivity by being several large sheets instead of tiny particles like in the standard formula. It also probably made it leak easier, then again that's probably preferable to the entire thing being torn to mush by the waves if it did melt enough.

Of course this is based on pykrete - it's the end of an episode about pykrete.

Aren't you littering (breaking the law) when those news papers fell it the water?
-
And in the icy Baltic seas this stuff was made for it would last for days if not weeks or months.

There was an idea to build a aircraft carrier out of pykrete in the 40's.
-
very old idea based on pykrete
