In 1970 my best friend, his fiance' and myself sunk her father's sailboat in Charleston harbor. None of us had ANY sailing experience but claimed we did. Took the boat out of her parents private dock around noon and soon realized we could not direct the boat and were bobbing helplessly. Unbeknown to us the sailboat has a retractable rudder and it was raised. No cell phones then, no radio, no flotation devices. Several kids with small sunfish boards were soon circling us but unable to help. I typical afternoon storm rolled in and as we were drifting out into the harbor the boat began taking water. A trawler coming in saw us and threw us a line and we tied off as he began motoring in to safety. Unfortunately every time his bow went UP his stern went DOWN dragging our bow under water. The trawler could not hear us screaming and was battling the weather. By the time we got the line untied from the trawler we were swamped. Our sailboat sunk immediately and the 3 of us were swimming for our lives. We reached a small island in the harbor which submerges at high tide but was still enough solid grown for us as we swam to it. Within 20 minutes the island was about the size of a small SUV and we were panicked. Luckily the father and owner of the boat, a retired Army Colonel who taught at the Citadel, had gone to the pier of his boat club opposite the battery and witnessed his sailboat sinking. A huge Coast Guard cutter soon arrived and using a chair hoist plucked all 3 of us from the water. Upon arriving at the station we had nothing but the shorts and shirts we were wearing and the Colonel was there and NOT happy ! As soon as we returned to the Colonel's house on the harbor I got in my car and LEFT ! My best friend married the Colonel's daughter the next year and the sailboat was pulled up and salvaged..

Good thing You got a PLB (Personal Location Beacon/Epirb). I got one too. Congrats for surviving a faulty boat!

The boat left to swim ? He can become a hindrance to other ships.

What a 'salty' situation...

For all they knew, they were going to die from hypothermia or sharks, but "Oh, yeh, let's film it!" Idiots.
-
I can't believe how people lack humility in virtualy any situation. The man looking oldest of the bunch still films himself for future show off. Was he supposed to be the responsible for the others ? If such, I think he should be ashamed of himself, and not playing around like à toddler.

They're smiling now............

On June 28, 2016, out of Charleston, SC a 27ft Sea Pro ended up falling apart and sinking with 4 persons on board. Surrounded by sharks they waited for rescue. Having an epirb, life jackets and staying with the boat saved their life.
