Sigh. what a dream life. I rented a sail boat to live on in Norway for almost a year. I motored around the fjords a bit, but never got up a sail quite yet. I didnt feel like I was in a rush for that either. Somehow alot of chaos (most of all a really crazy girlfriend) happened in my life towards the end of it. I ended up broke, docked at a very expensive harbour, deep in debt to it and with a broken start engine I never could get fixed to get out of there. The owner had it force-towed with all my belongings and I ended up on the streets, dealing drugs and crashing at my customers pads, sleeping on their floors. I eventually got life back together somehow. Amazing how life can whip you around sometimes. But I still reminiss about those beautiful cruises I had, waking up every morning with a sea view, having my coffee on deck, sharing my breakfast with swans... nothing can compare. Now im a family man, and the only thing left to aim for is this dream again.

My big love ...LAURA DEKKER.
...I LOVE YOU!!! -
I showed 'Maidentrip' to my Grade 6 (12 years old) students in Thailand, because they tend to be quite infantile, to show them what is possible if they just try. The girls reacted especially well and it bought up the issues that they don't need men (if you've ever lived in Asia you'll get what I mean)...this young lady changed and inspired many of my students to rethink their perceptions. She's a wonderful role model for kids around the world.

Meanwhile I'm 16 and not even allowed to be home alone for a night..

Man....how did she get it SO right SO early. Super envious : /

Can you sail from pole around to other pole
-
Oh so she's 16 in the title and 14 in the description????
-
in the last decade there have been a rash of these, but none like Laura. the rest had sponsors, and many were doing solo non stop trips. Laura did this on her own, with only the help of her parents, and not very much money. it should be mentioned, her father is a boatbuilder, so most of this was sweat equity. she chose to do it with stops, because she wanted to actually see some of the world she lives in, not to just do some stunt for attention. respect to her for her singular accomplishment, and it is my wish that more people had the kind of adventurous can-do spirit that she does!

Some of these comments really suck... Some people just dream away their lives and never do a thing but be negative. That's ok you just don't have the balls to go beyond your nose... So you got a rise out of posting, go to some other place that small circle of losers.. This kid just tried something she loved... When was the last time you got off your ass ...Take a class on having a little...

"back at home, they're only thinking about money". I agree that life shouldn't be just about working until you die but it's easy to talk like that when you start out with your own sailboat at 16.

I will be 4 years old next week and I flew to the moon and back last night all by myself. I am Laura's little brother and I can do more crazy things like her. I am so hungry for attention (and money). Please buy my book.
When 14-year-old Laura Dekker set out in 2012 to become the youngest person to single-handedly circumnavigate the globe, filmmaker Jillian Schlesinger documented the remarkable 518-day journey. In this excerpt from the full-length documentary Maidentrip, Dekker follows the route her parents took 20 years earlier through French Polynesia. Today, Dekker holds the record for the youngest person to sail around the world by herself.
