why spare cassettes?

How did you get the small modifications installed? Do you have to search for specific trades and arrange for them to meet you at a specific marina perhaps?

The Froli Sleep System would seem tailor made for narrowboat berths. A link: http://www.froli.com/en/bed-systems/ A very tidy engine room!

I don't have the time or energy to peruse all the previous comments but i was unhappy at the thought of detergents being pumped into our canals on such a large scale. Why do i bother buying Ecover as a householder?
Because i can of course and i want to minimise my damage to our water environment. -
Hello if you're going to replace the batteries. Then I have a suggestion for you. I have very good experience with Trojan batteries themselves I have 12 Trojan T105 6V.
These batteries have a very good reputation and I can add to my good experience.
Calculate your usage. Take care that a battery should not deeper discharged than 50%. That is your capacity.
So if you buy a 100 Ah battery than has it a capacity of 50 Ah
I self have 12 Trojan T105 6V batteries 3 banks of 24V coupled as one large battery bank. -
Aren't "shear" pins used to prevent the torque of a stuck propeller from trying to tear the engine out of its mounts?
-
PS: Once the batteries no longer take a charge, the charger can over heat them and start a fire. Maybe.

As an engineer, I enjoyed watching your digging in to the break down of engine form, function and maintenance. Your self described tenacity for details has brought you a long way to having a well run ship! I own a 1980 37' Hunter sloop and its fun to look for the differences and instructional to learn the similarities. Thank you!
Being a electrical engineer, a few notes on the batteries:
Lead acid (motor) vs gel (house) vs other types have slightly different charging voltages. Your system may be under or over charging one or more. On a sea going boat like mine I would automatically replace any battery well past its life expectancy because you can't just call a tow truck 200 miles from shore. The cut affords you some leeway as your always at shore but don't be surprised when they give out at an in opportune time. Ten years old? Really? I've never see the like!
As you mentioned the terminals are dangerous and need to be covered. Even a piece of plexiglass for cover would let you see the batteries while preventing a dropped tool from shorting them out.
Thank you again. I started at the beginning and will check back regularly once I'm through! -
Great explanation of all the various engine parts. Simple but still gave a clear explanation of what they do.

How many people can your shower cubicle accommodate? I like someone to scrub my back, but yours seems a little cramped.

That was really a helpful video.Seems there's many considerations with engines but they don't seem so intimidating now. Loads of information and a clear nicely put together video . It's so cool to have free resources like this . Thank you so much . !

Interesting vid, nice boat. You could probably do with a dehumidifier if you close all the doors and windows, or you can use plants to absorb moisture. BTW all hot water central heating systems I've seen you have to leave one radiator without a thermostatic valve as a safety measure.

I would not have expected to be able to watch a ~45min video about a boat engine (not really interested in engineering) but you somehow manage to make it interesting and enjoyable. Which is good as now I have more understanding of how it all works back there and have a better picture of all the aspects of living on a canal boat. Thanks for that, you make a great job of showing the narrow boat living from all aspects - not only the swans, ducks, cruising and all the pleasant stuff but also the messy and complicated problems that are unavoidable. My next visit to UK will have to include checking the maps of canals to make sure I have a chance of seeing a narrow boat with my own eyes.

Bed does not appear to be conducive to more than a one night's stand!
-
I was advised by boat safety to permanently cover the battery terminals for the very reason to avoid short circuit, brilliant videos by the way.

The answer to the one rad without a TRV is heat bypass it is common in houses,if all TRVs were to shut off at the same time it can reduce the the boiler overheating.

Just watched your engine tour. Succinct and to the point without waffle. A trait a few people I know could learn from. Your admission of non-expertise is evident in as much as, if you knew all points on all parts and their workings, you would end up waffling. Well done sir. I too have watched nearly all your vlogs, and enjoyed them immensely. Your delivery and manner on camera does you credit. Keep up the excellent work, look forward to 2017's episodes. A Happy New Year to you and yours.

I know I sound a right numpty saying this but does it ever make you anxious sleeping on top of a hot water tank ? Great videos I have been watching all the way through from episode one . I was one of those naive folk thinking that life aboard a Narrowboat would be all constant bathing on the roof and feeding ducks and drinking champagne , your videos have opened my eyes . I was thinking of selling my house and living a cheaper life on the waterways but it seems it's not as cheap as I imagined with mooring fees etc unless you continuously cruise of course.
Probably will wait till I'm retired and can continuously cruise .
Once again great , informative and highly addictive to watch videos .
Thanks Skipper -
Fascinating ! You answered all the questions I would ask about the running and maintenance of a narrowboat very thoroughly.

A very interesting bow to stern explanation of how a canal boat works .
This is part 2 of my extensive narrow boat tour; for part 1, click here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLuZrsWiCYM In this video I cover the bathroom ("head"), bedroom and then the engine room. The latter takes up the bulk of the video so to skip straight to that bit, go to 8'50" Got a question? Read this! http://www.CruisingTheCut.co.uk/f-a-q/ Fancy a Cruising The Cut mug or t-shirt?
