Reid Stowe, a 55-year old professional adventurer, and his 24-year old girlfriend, Soanya Ahmad, are attempting to stay at sea until 2010, communicating with civilization solely via satellite phone. The couple has been sailing aboard the 70-foot schooner "Anne" through the South Atlantic since April 2007. Stowe and Ahmad call their mission "Mars Ocean Odyssey," because they think the journey will provide valuable lessons for a manned flight to Mars. Follow the 1,000 Days at Sea project through its website at http://www.1000days.net where you can read daily blog posts e-mailed in by their satellite phone. Enjoy the discussion about this voyage over in the Sailing Anarchy forums: http://www.sailinganarchy.com Next up, it's a Flashback to 1958: A private yacht for every family was just on the horizon. In 1958, Arthur Radebaugh, in his syndicated Sunday comic strip "Closer than we Think," gave readers of the Chicago Tribune a glimpse at the future of yachting with his design of "The Poor Man's Yacht." The caption predicts that in "the world of tomorrow," the family car might be used as the motive power for boats. All the yachtsman-of-the-future would need to do is drive his car into the cradle of the new marine creation, allowing the automobile's engine to run the boat.
