your dig on diesels "assholes" just rendered your review useless to me. i could never trust a man who does not appreciate an American made truck rolling cole. FYI... buy the K1600 instead of the r 1200, or youll be like all the guys driving gas powered trucks who only then dream of being big strong cole rolling "diesel assholes". nice vid for the most part. 🚛🇺🇸

Did you ever find out about the clutch issue? I am considering this bike, but that clutch issue made me pause.
-
I have a pretty good tyre pressure monitor but it occasionally lets off an odour.

Great and informative review. I have a 2016 R1200RT and cannot disagree with your review. I did change the wind screen to a larger version and glad I did. I also noted the clutch is a bit touchy at the end of the release. I love the bike. Interesting, I was going to the the K1600RT but after talking to two Canadians who were in town (Houston); one had the R and the other the K, they suggested I stay with the R. Thanks Canada. Again great review and honest. Thanks.

Good realistic review, thank you. I own a 2005 K1200LT BMW, and I'm always looking at my next ride. I've tested both the waterboxer, R1200RT and the K1600GTL. I agree with your assessment, I'd choose the K1600, even if I have to buy a used one to hit the same price point as an RT.

I rode the RT and GT back to back at the weekend. The GT's engine is boss, but it needs more revs to get it going as it's over 100 lbs heavier than the RT. It also sounds wonderful too. But when trying to change lines in the twisties it felt like a lumbering hippo next to the RT which felt like it was on rails. If you stick to freeways the GT is a good choice. But if you want a great two-up bike that can still carve corners like a sporting bike, IMPO the RT is the best tourer bar none.
-
Is it safe to summarize the review by saying "meh...", as in "sure, it's an ok bike, but not enough bang for your buck"?
-
It appears that the stock windscreen on the newer RTs is much poorer than my 2008 with deflecting water. I've never had a problem getting soaked by rain bouncing off the windscreen. Oh well - can't be perfect.
-
I love your review. Clear and realistic! Ideal for riders. others are just typical ride, park and review. Thank you! I am a bit concern about the smell u mentioned and the slipping clutch. From the sound , it is definitely slipping.
-
What you think, is your clutch slipping is the ASC kicking in due to the wet road conditions. Its probably noticing the back wheel starting to slip. I own a 2012 RT and it does the same thing.
-
Thanks for the review as i'm touring Japan on one in 2017. I own the 1200RS and most of the things you dislike are the same on the RS.

I live in jersey I'd like one ? How much are they £

So far, I have experienced absolutely NO negatives with mine. I am perhaps the most pleased cycle owner in the country right now. There is a reason all the mags love the new rt. No, it is not a car, so you might get wind and water on you, and it is not dead silent. It is the absolute ONLY cycle, right now. For me. The mirrors are perfect. For me. The brakes, the torque, the speed, the handling, and every other possible thing I can think of after 3700 miles, is 100 percent right. For me. The shift pro is great, especially when shifting after second gear at around 4000 rpm all the way up to 6th, as you will be moving along really well, leaving all but the most aggressive riders and cagers behind. I don't race, especially against 180 mph+ rocket riding fools, so I could care less if they can go faster and quicker than me. I am comfortable going up to 110 mph once in a while, and can cruise all day, comfortably, at 80 or so, and that is perfect. For me. I don't ride to "compare penis sizes" with other riders. I ride my own line, on my own time, and in my own way, and could care less if there are "quieter, smoother, bigger and uncut" cycles out there. I have found my machine. Now, guys, go out and find what is right. For you. And, by the way, after riding for 40 years before selecting the rt, I did NOT do a demo ride. I had ridden various other models, owned a bunch of cycles, and had ridden some friends' beemers over the years, so I knew I would enjoy this rt. I do. Absolutely. But then, I would also enjoy a Guzzi, a Harley, a Yamaha, Kawasaki, etc...because they are what they are, and it just happens that some of them are more right. For me. I can't wait to read reviews on the new electric cycles. Talk about smooth, fast, comfortable, etc...but they won't have a lot of character. No clunk. No vibration. Yawn.

Excellent review. I love your vids and am a follower. As a fellow FJR owner, I was anxious to get your feel for this bike as I am considering. Thanks.
-
I liked the RT a lot more than you did, so I bought one. The engine behaves behaves more and more smoothly as it gets broken in if my experience on the 1200GS carries through. I like the taller gearing on the RT as opposed to the GS, it's much better suited to touring.

Loving your reviews, top work, thanks for sharing your experiences

slipper clutch, eh? Sorry, but if you need a slipper clutch with this engine, you shouldn't be riding motorcycles. The ability of the boxer twin to engine brake is one of the best characteristics of the engine. if the sksipper clutch interferes with that, then I think they made a mistake in including it.

diesel and gas, car or truck are held to the EPA laws it's just that those, mostly young males, in large diesel trucks love to remove all that EPA emissions stuff for more power and smoke. any cop who cared could easily write them up. On the flip side there are plenty of people who do the same with their gas, removing emissions components for more power and while it may or may not do as much damage to the environment it's not noticed by most since it doesn't produce a black soot cloud.

Why so many copies of the Honda Gold Wing hitting the markets?
2016 BMW R 1200 RT Motorcycle Review - The little brother in many ways to the K1600 GT, this guy packs a huge twin boxer engine that feels much like a big v-twin cruiser. It's torque curve is very flat giving very good power no matter where you are. Low speed control is phenomenal especially when you consider the overall bike size. The body carries many of the same features as the 1600 without the luxury items but it does feel and perform IMO more like an adventure bike than sport tourer. For me, I look for power, smoothness and speed in a tourer and the feel of the big twin makes me want it in a different frame. Visit http://TwoWheelObsession.com for all the new content!
