10 discoveries from ice so pink it's called watermelon ice to an actually mammoth found preserved in ice found by archaeologists! Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 5. Northwest Passage Wreckage In the 1840’s British explorer,John Franklin, and his crew were hoping to find a successful route to Asia from Europe by going through what’s known as the Northwest Passage. Some didn’t realize how doomed the expedition led by the two ships HMS Erebus and HMS Terror was from the beginning. The two ships had enough food and supplies to last them for seven years. They were last spotted at that time by a whaling boat in the Baffin Bay and continued to sail westward. The crew was forced to abandon their ships after they were most likely rendered immobile from the passage containing too much ice. Canadian divers found this bell in 2014, risked getting hypothermia and dived into to the frigid waters to salvage reminisce of the lost boats. 4. Watermelon Ice Pink snow is known to happen at high altitudes in places like the Himalayas and northern latitudes. But what on earth is it! The Arctic was originally described by the British explorer John Ross in the early 1800’s. There’s seems be an unprecedented amount of this mysterious snow in the Arctic in recent years. Originally it was believed that it was a chemical reaction from meteoric iron deposits but recent studies prove otherwise. Biologists now came to the conclusion that the watermelon ice is actually from a chemical reaction with a species of algae that loves cold weather. In its original form, it’s actually green but as it begins to absorb UV rays it turns into the reddish color you see in this photo. The strange algae is actually beginning to bloom and some claim this could be the reason the ice caps are melting at a faster rate. 3. Zeleny Yar Necropolis Remarkably preserved mummies were discovered near the edge of the siberian arctic circle at a notorious necropolis known as Zeleny Yar. There were 34 graves that were dug up here by archaeologists but one thing still wasn’t clear. Who the heck were these people! 11 of the mummies had shattered or missing skulls. Some believe that the smashing of the skulls was an ancient ritual to ensure protection from mysterious spells. 5 of them were found bling out in copper jewelery and covered in elaborate reindeer, beaver, wolverine and bear furs! Artifacts that were buried include bronze bowls from persia, iron combat knives, silver medallions and bronze bird figurines. They certainly enjoyed a little luxury. So back to the question about who these people were! Scientists DNA samples came back inconclusive in may 2016, due to the damage of the bodies so it’s not clear what civilization they were from. All they seem to know is that they had ties to Persia. It could be a whole new civilization for all we know. 2. The Thames Vessel Nearly 140 years ago, a British vessel nicknamed “The Thames” after the river that runs through London mysteriously sank off the coast of Northern siberia. It was carrying a large cargo of graphite and sank in 1877. It’s final resting point remained undiscovered until 2016. The icy water waters and wild winds of Russia proved to be too strong for the vessel. The Northeast passage was the nickname for the tricky route in which the Thames was travelling and it’s never really proved to be a reliable way to go. Near a river in the village of Goroshikha, two Russian scientists actually found the shipwreck, or what was left of it. Using sonar and looking through old maps, they were able to come across these remains of the British ship. 1. Camp Century Nuclear Waste This discovery hasn’t happened yet but due to melting snow in Greenland, it seems to be in evitable and could expose some secrets the USA was trying to hide during the Cold War. A place known as Camp Century was basically an under snow city and complex nuke launching site with a vast tunnel network in Northwestern Greenland. The project was poorly planned and they found out that the glacier that it was build in, was moving much quicker than previously thought and the project was abandoned in 1967. This held all kinds of research facilities, a cinema, a hospital and a church. These were all powered by one thing: a nuclear reactor… Now due to melting of ice in Greenland, this former city under ice threatens to expose government secrets as well as let off extremely toxic pollutants into the Arctic Sea sometime in the year 2090. Scientists never thought the waste from the reactor would ever get out. This is a discovery that archaeologists really don’t want to discover any time soon and are hoping snowfall will increase in this area.
